Middlesbrough’s train station sits at the heart of the town. The railway line was first opened in 1830 as an extension of the Stockton to Darlington Railway. Back then, Middlesbrough was a fairly new town, and the railway connected it to its – then larger – counterparts of Stockton and Darlington.
Later, lines were opened to the eastern seaside towns of Redcar and Saltburn. Middlesbrough Train Station’s building opened in 1847 as demand for rail services to and from the town grew. The station was knocked down in 1874 and replaced by a much larger building, which is the one that stands today
Repairs were recently carried out in 2017 and 2018, refurbishing the Wood Street car park and upgrading the stonework of the building. In 2021, a new direct service to London Kings Cross launched. The North Eastern Railway Class 800 Azuma was the first direct service from Middlesbrough to our capital since 1988.
Middlesbrough has a fairly large bus station which services the Tees Valley and beyond. If you want to get to Middlesbrough Train Station by bus, you’ll have to allow about 15 to 20 minutes to walk between the bus station and the train station.
Parking facilities have recently been upgraded at the station. There is a large multi-storey car park nearby which is popular with those coming to Middlesbrough for some retail therapy.
